The tax credit does not have to be repaid and is equal to 10 percent of the home’s purchase price up to a maximum of $8,000 for 1st time home buyers and $6,500 for current home owners. Single taxpayers with incomes up to $125,000 and married couples with incomes up to $225,000 qualify for the full tax credit. A First-time home buyer is classified as someone who has not owned a principal residence during the three-year period prior to the purchase. The credit is available for homes purchased on or after November 7, 2009 and before April 30, 2010. Current home owners who have used the home being sold or vacated as a principal residence for five consecutive years within the last eight. Current home owners purchasing a new or existing home between November 7, 2009 and April 30, 2010 now qualify for the tax credit up to $6,500.
